With just under two months remaining until the July 12 deadline, the time is drawing near for eligible candidates to apply for the 2013 Barbara Forfar Nursing Scholarship which provides monetary assistance to qualified nurses and nursing students of Ocean Medical Center of Brick Township who desire to continue their formal education in nursing profession.

The Barbara Forfar Nursing Scholarship Fund was established on January 15, 2011 and is part of the Ocean Medical Center Foundation family of funds.

The fund was established to honor the memory of long-time Point Pleasant resident Barbara Forfar or “Foof” as she was called by her fellow nurses and other colleagues in the operating room, and her forty-four years of dedication to the nursing profession with all but three years of her service being associated with the Ocean Medical Center or its predecessor hospitals.

The scholarship fund awards one (or more) nursing scholarship during September of each year to eligible nurses or nursing students of the Ocean Medical Center.

To qualify for the scholarship, the applicant must be an employee or nursing student at Ocean Medical Center and must be enrolled in a RN program, an upper division program (RN to BSN) or advanced degree program (MSN, PhD) in nursing.

All Ocean Medical Center nurses and nursing students from all practice areas are invited to apply but special consideration will be given to those applicants having an interest in operating room practices, procedures, techniques and technology and those nurses who are on the CARE program.

The scholarship must be used to supplement tuition, fees, lab costs, books or educational supply expenses.

During its short history, The Barbara Forfar Nursing Scholarship Fund has awarded $4,500 in scholarships to nurses and nursing students of Ocean Medical Center.

On April 21 this year, The Barbara Forfar Nursing Scholarship Fund held its second annual fundraiser named “Rock for the Nurses-Rock for the Shore” at Jenks Club in Point Pleasant Beach and the proceeds of the successful event will help to continue to provide for educational scholarships for nurses and nursing students at Ocean Medical Center.

The “Rock for the Nurses-Rock for the Shore” benefit also provided a portion of the proceeds to the United Way organizations of both Monmouth and Ocean County which were specifically earmarked to help Superstorm Sandy victims here at the Jersey Shore.

The 2013 Barbara Forfar Nursing Scholarship award presentation will be held on Thursday, September 19 in a formal presentation ceremony on the Ocean Medical Center main campus in Brick.

The Barbara Forfar Nursing Scholarship Fund held its second annual fundraiser at Jenks Club in Point Pleasant Beach on Sunday April 21 to help raise funds for educational scholarships for nurses and nursing students at the Ocean Medical Center and to help provide some financial assistance to Hurricane Sandy victims at the Jersey Shore.

The “Rock for the Nurses-Rock for the Shore” benefit was announced in January by The Barbara Forfar Nursing Scholarship Fund which teamed-up with the United Way of both Monmouth and Ocean Counties and Jenkinson’s in Point Pleasant Beach.

The event took place from 11am to 7pm at Jenks Club located within Jenkinson’s Pavilion on the boardwalk and raised money for the Barbara Forfar Nursing Scholarship and the United Way organizations of Monmouth and Ocean County to be earmarked to help Sandy victims here at the Jersey Shore.

“Although we fell short of our projected attendance numbers and considering the fact that we had to change our event location from the River Rock to Jenkinson’s just about 45 days ago, Sunday April 21 was still a success as we more than doubled our proceeds from our 2012 fundraiser” mentioned Walt Konopka, chairperson of the Barbara Forfar Nursing Scholarship Fund.

“My sister Barbara loved the beach, ocean and boardwalk. She planned her time off from work specifically around the high and low tides. She would have been devastated by the destruction Sandy caused. She would have done whatever she could to help rebuild the shore. By giving some of our event proceeds to the United Way organizations of Monmouth and Ocean County, we can provide a little help to the Sandy victims who still need it here at the Jersey Shore in Barbara’s name. She would have insisted upon it and we are very happy to do so” Konopka added.

The estimated crowd of 300 guests revolved in and out of Jenks Club throughout the afternoon and were treated to live music by nine of the top musicians from around the Jersey Shore who showcased their talents on two alternating stages.

In all, nine musical groups and their band members donated their time for the day and performed for approximately fifty minutes each with Bobby Clark and his event crew providing the sound mixing for the bands.

A hot and cold buffet, coffee, desert and soft drinks were provided by Jenkinson’s.

“We would like to extend a sincere thank you to all of our event partners and donors including The United Way of Monmouth County, The United Way of Ocean County, Greater Media Radio Stations WRAT and WJRZ, Bobby Clark Events, Bow-Kay Florist of Brick, Farro’s Tees of Toms River, TLC Banner and Sign of Toms River and of course Jenkinson’s and the Storino family. The Jenks staff stepped up to the plate for us when we had to change our venue and we could not have done this without them. They were tremendous” mentioned Konopka.

“In addition, the success of this event could not have been accomplished without all of the musicians and band members who donated their time for the afternoon. They were fantastic, some of the best around the Jersey Shore, they had Jenkinson’s rocking and we are sincerely grateful to all of them” Konopka finished.

Ned Ryerson (Toms River) and his new band TSO kicked- off the event at 11am with their unique rock sounds and got the crowd off their feet right from the start when guest harmonica player Matt Andryszewski of Toms River joined the band for a lively rendition of “Steal My Kisses” written by Ben Harper.

The Shore Ratz consisting of Scott Rosen of Freehold (drums), Rich Meyer of Neptune (bass), Jules “The Claw” Levitt of Manalapan (guitar-vocals) and Shannon Bray of Edison (vocals- percussion) took the stage next and rocked-out to some classic cuts from Grand Funk Railroad and Joan Baez among others.

Wall Township native Matt Noffsinger and the Matt Noffsinger Band then stepped-up to the spotlight and started their set with the Led Zeppelin classic “Rock N Roll”. Noffsinger closed his fifty minute performance bringing down the house with his very appropriate Joe Cocker rendition of “A Little Help From My Friends”.

The Guns 4 Hire Trio appeared next with Gene Potts of Red Bank (vocals) John Bauso of Matawan (guitar and vocals) and Sal Marra of Little Silver (guitar and vocals) belting out some great harmonies and song selections, including the recent release “Home” by Phil Phillips which had the crowd at Jenks singing along.

Next up was Howell Township resident Joe Baracata (lead guitar and vocals) and The Joe Baracata Band who had the Jenks crowd rockin’ to Bruce Springsteen tracks “Waitin on a Sunny Day” and “Glory Days” among others.

Lisa Barone (Matawan) and Wendy Horn (Eatontown) known as Lisa & Wendy followed next and became a real crowd favorite with some classic acoustic renditions ranging from Carol King to Heart.

Belmar’s favorite son Pat Roddy and The Pat Roddy Band then took center stage and continued the festive atmosphere with some great classic rock tracks as well as some traditional Irish tunes. Roddy then invited Wendy (of Lisa and Wendy) to the stage to take the lead as they performed the classic Aretha Franklin cut “Respect”.

Middletown native Craig Daniel took over next and quickly became a favorite with the families and children who were in attendance. Daniel’s smooth acoustic sounds echoed throughout Jenks as he performed some classic Beatles, Jackson Browne and Eric Clapton tunes.

Closing the event was Timepiece who has been rocking the Jersey Shore for over 20 years. Founders Terry Wildeman of Farmingdale (lead guitar and vocals) and Fred DeFeo of Island Heights (drums and vocals) took the stage with their other band members and rocked Jenkinson’s for 50 minutes straight with Jersey Shore classic rock cuts from Springsteen, Bon Jovi, Southside Johnny and others.

Rockin Robyn Lane of WRAT (95.9 FM) helped emcee the event in addition to conducting live “call-in” on-air interviews with benefit organizers and officials of Ocean Medical Center and the United Way throughout the afternoon.

Other guests of note in attendance on Sunday afternoon included Dean Lin, President of Ocean Medical Center; Regina Foley, Vice President of Operations and Chief Nursing Officer of the Ocean Medical Center; Dr. Theresa Wurmser, Director of the Meridian Ann May Center for Nursing and Michael Oakes, Senior Development Officer of the Ocean Medical Center Foundation.

The United Way of Monmouth County was represented by President and CEO Tim Hearne and Director of Resource Development Tamer Gouda while the United Way of Ocean County was represented by Executive Director Linda Gyimoty and Director of Marketing Allyson Rey.

The event will take place on Sunday, April 21 starting at 11am at Jenks CLub at Jenkinson’s Boardwalk located at 300 Ocean Avenue in Point Pleasant Beach.

Slated to perform are some of the top musicians from around the Jersey Shore including Timepiece, The Pat Roddy Band, The Matt Noffsinger Band, The Joe Baracata Band, Lisa & Wendy, Craig Daniels, Guns 4 Hire Trio, Ned Ryerson Live and The Shore Ratz.

“Not since the mid-1970s at some of the super nightclubs of the time like Art Stock’s Royal Manor (Wall) and Hoffman’s Beach House (Point Pleasant Beach), has the Jersey Shore seen this number of top local groups come together at one location on the same day. All nine of our musical performers are very well known around the Jersey Shore and each has their own unique sound, musical repertoire and large fan base. We are extremely thankful to all of them for contributing. There is no doubt in my mind with all of that musical talent together at one location, we will be rockin’ the roof off that day at Jenks for a tremendous cause” mentioned Walt Konopka, chairperson of the Barbara Forfar Nursing Scholarship Fund.

“We had to change our original venue earlier this month and Jenkinson’s stepped up to the plate and welcomed us with open arms and assured us they will do everything they can to help us promote awareness and attract attendance to our April 21 fundraiser. They are very excited to help. Jenkinson’s is one of the premiere venues in New Jersey and has a great location that can accommodate all ages and families with a fantastic view of the beach and ocean. We are extremely excited about this change and we cannot thank Jenkinson’s enough for helping us” Konopka continued.

Timepiece has been rocking the Jersey Shore for over 20 years. Founded in 1990 by Terry Wildeman (lead guitar and vocals) who grew up in the shadows of Asbury Park and now lives in the Wall Township area and Fred DeFeo of Island Heights (drums and vocals), the band also includes John Oesner (vocals, harp and percussion), John Van Decker (bass and vocals) and Mike Scialfa (keyboards). Scialfa, who is the brother-in-law to New Jersey music legend Bruce Springsteen, along with Wildeman and DeFeo, have been around the Jersey Shore music scene individually for over four decades.

Belmar’s favorite son Pat Roddy and The Pat Roddy Band, have been a mainstay at the Jersey Shore since 1997. In addition to Roddy, a St. Rose High School alumni who sings, plays guitar, harmonica and piano, the band is comprised of Brian Franca of Old Bridge (saxophone), Chris Giunco of Manasquan (keyboards), Justin Hetrick of Asbury Park (drums), Bob Giunco of Manasquan (percussion), “Mister W” of Farmingdale (bass) and Sean Watson of Spring Lake (guitar).

The Matt Noffsinger Band is a classic & modern rock band that has quickly gained popularity along the Jersey Shore and tri-state area. Started by Wall Township native Matt Noffsinger who currently resides in Bayville (lead guitar and vocals), the band has been performing up and down the Jersey Shore for over 10 years. Joined by some of the best musicians and performers in the area, the Matt Noffsinger Band plays an extremely diverse and unique style of classic and modern rock and gets crowds of any age up on their feet.

Singer-songwriter and Howell Township resident Joe Baracata (lead guitar and vocals) and The Joe Baracata Band have spent the last 10 years building their reputation as one of New Jersey’s best cover bands.
There is no doubt in my mind with all of that musical talent together at one location, we will be rockin’ the roof off that day for a tremendous cause” mentioned Walt Konopka, chairperson of the Barbara Forfar Nursing Scholarship Fund.

Timepiece has been rocking the Jersey Shore for over 20 years. Joined by some of the best musicians and performers in the area, the Matt Noffsinger Band plays an extremely diverse and unique style of classic and modern rock and gets crowds of any age up on their feet.

The Barbara Forfar Nursing Scholarship Fund was established on January 15, 2011 and is part of the Ocean Medical Center Foundation family of funds.

The scholarship was established to honor the memory of long-time Point Pleasant resident Barbara Forfar or “Foof” as she was called by her fellow nurses and other colleagues in the operating room, and her forty-four years of dedication to the nursing profession with all but three years of her service associated with the Ocean Medical Center or its predecessor hospitals.

The scholarship fund provides monetary assistance to qualified nurses and nursing students of Ocean Medical Center who desire to continue their formal education in nursing profession in the form of scholarships and awards one (or more) nursing scholarship during September of each year to eligible applicants.

During its short history, The Barbara Forfar Nursing Scholarship has awarded $4,500 to nine nurses and nursing students of Ocean Medical Center.

“Sunday April 21 will be a very special afternoon full of great music by nine of the best bands around the shore, great food and all for a pretty special cause. It will be an afternoon that rocks for over eight hours straight. We believe that this will be one of the biggest events around the Jersey Shore in April, our own local 12.12.12 concert, and anyone who attends, besides having a fantastic time, will feel good about knowing that they are doing something very special to help our local Monmouth and Ocean County communities. You really do not want to miss this one” Konopka finished.

The Barbara Forfar Nursing Scholarship Fund announced today that it will team-up with the United Way of both Monmouth and Ocean Counties and Jenkinson’s of Point Pleasant Beach for a very special afternoon to help the Monmouth and Ocean victims of Hurricane Sandy and the nurses of Ocean Medical Center at its second annual nursing scholarship fundraiser “Rock for the Nurses – Rock for the Shore.”

“Rock for the Nurses – Rock for the Shore” will feature live music for eight plus hours throughout the entire afternoon, an all you can eat hot & cold buffet, cash bar, coffee and desert and will also include various raffles, give-a-ways and other special activities during the fundraiser.

Scheduled to perform will be some of the top bands from around the jersey shore including Matt Noffsinger, Joe Baracata, Timepiece, Pat Roddy, The Shore Ratz, Craig Daniel, Lisa and Wendy, Guns 4 Hire Trio and Ned Ryerson Live in addition to some other special musical guests.

All proceeds from the event will be divided among the Barbara Forfar Nursing Scholarship Fund which annually benefits the nurses of Ocean Medical Center by providing nursing scholarships to nurses and nursing students looking to further their formal education in the nursing profession and the United Way of both Monmouth and Ocean County to be earmarked to specifically help the local victims of Hurricane Sandy here at the jersey shore.

Tickets are $30 per person (kids under 12 are free) and are available for advance purchase at Jenks Club (Point Pleasant Beach), Bow-Kay Florist (Brick) and at the Ocean Medical Center (Brick). Tickets will also be available for purchase the day of the event at the door.

“With many of our friends and neighbors here at the jersey shore still feeling the wrath of Sandy, we thought it would only be fitting to try and continue to help them get back on their feet in whatever way we can” mentioned Walt Konopka, chairperson of the Barbara Forfar Nursing Scholarship Fund and brother to the late Mrs. Forfar.

“We had the date and most of the entertainment already scheduled before Sandy arrived, so it was really a simple decision for us to put a new twist on our benefit. We talked to the United Way organizations of both Monmouth and Ocean and they assured us that any financial help we provide to them would go directly to help the people of the jersey shore who were affected by Sandy. We are gald we can provide some assistance.”

“Many of the nurses of Ocean Medical Center and their families who live in the costal Monmouth and Ocean areas also got hit pretty hard by Sandy but they still worked around the clock to help others in need. This just shows how passionate nurses are to their profession. With this fundraiser, we can also continue to provide some financial help to these nurses and nursing students, who live, work and serve us right in our own backyards, who want to further their education in the nursing profession.”

“Sunday April 21 will be a very special afternoon full of great music by some of the best bands around the shore, good food and all for a pretty special cause. It will be an afternoon that rocks for eight hours straight. I believe that this will be one of the biggest events around the jersey shore in April, our own local 12.12.12 concert and anyone who attends, besides having a fantastic time, will feel good about knowing that they are doing something very special to help our local Monmouth and Ocean County communities.”

“We also want to thank the Jenks Club management and staff, Bobby Clark Events and all of our musical performers for working closely with us to make this event happen. They are as passionate about this event as we are. I am certain it will be a fantastic afternoon…!” Konopka finished.

During its short history, The Barbara Forfar Nursing Scholarship has awarded $4,500 to nine nurses and nursing students of Ocean Medical Center.

“My sister loved the beach, ocean and boardwalk. She planned her time off from work specifically around the high and low tides” Konopka added.

“Barb would have been devastated by the destruction Sandy caused, however, with her true passion and dedication as a nurse she would have jumped to the call at a moment’s notice to help others without fear or hesitation. She would have done whatever she could to help rebuild the shore. We will be helping to do that just a bit in her memory on Sunday April 21.”
