SEPTEMBER 29, 2020 (BRICK, NJ) - The Barbara Forfar Nursing Scholarship Fund advisory committee is pleased to announce that they have awarded nursing scholarships to two team members of Ocean Medical Center.
Shoshana Diamond of Jackson Township and Emily Trione of Brick Township were presented individual $500 scholarships during a small award ceremony held Tuesday afternoon, September 29 on the Ocean Medical Center main campus in Brick.
The 2020 ceremony marks ten consecutive years that scholarships have been awarded to Ocean Medical Center team members from the scholarship fund.
The two 2020 scholarship recipients were selected by the Barbara Forfar Nursing Scholarship Fund Scholarship Advisory Committee after the committee members reviewed all scholarship applications and supporting documents from every candidate who applied.
Shoshana Diamond has been employed with Ocean Medical Center since 2013 and is currently an outstanding member of the Operating Room staff. During the past seven years she has become well versed in several sub specialties including general, orthopedic, vascular and thoracic surgery. According to many of her Operating Room colleagues, Shoshana works tirelessly every day to ensure that her patient’s receive the highest quality of care. She is a RN and member of the Ocean Medical Center’s Shared Grievance and Surgical Site Infection Committees. Shoshana is pursuing her MSN degree at Chamberlain University School of Nursing with an expected completion date in June 2022.
Emily Trione is pursuing her BSN at William Patterson University with an anticipated completion date in December 2022. She is the daughter of Nancy Trione, a long-time career nurse at Ocean Medical Center who was one of three individuals who received the inauguual Barbara Forfar Nursing Scholarship in 2011. Emily is currently a Patient Care Technician and part of the 4 North nursing unit at Ocean Medical Center. She has been touted by her superiors as a hard working individual with a very strong character who is always looking to improve. Her ultimate goal is to become a part of the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) as she advances her career in Nursing.

They are exceptional Ocean Medical Center team members who truly have a sincere desire and compassion for the nursing profession and nursing education just like Barbara did. Both of them have an exceptional drive to gain as much knowledge as they can to help their staff, fellow team members and patients and have placed a priority on their own personal nursing education to help serve all of us better mentioned Walt Konopka, Chairperson of the Barbara Forfar Nursing Scholarship Fund.
“It just seems fitting that with 2020 being the 10-year anniversary of Barbara’s nursing scholarship fund, these two exceptional scholarship recipients have been selected by our committee with Shoshana, being an up and coming leader in the operating room while Emily, carries on her family’s long-time career tradition in the nursing profession as her mother did” Konopka continued.
“Finally, we want to also thank these two exceptional individuals, along with the hundreds of other Ocean Medical Center healthcare professionals and team members for being on the front lines for us during this Covid-19 pandemic. We are going to honor all of you on Sunday, May 2nd 2021 when we hold our 10-year Rock for the Nurses fundraiser celebration, which we rescheduled from May this year. In addition to the scholarship recipients, their family members and colleagues other guests of note in attendance at the award presentation included Jason Kreitner, Chief Hospital Executive of Ocean Medical Center, Marie Foley-Danecker, Chief Nursing Officer of Ocean Medical Center; Dr. Teri Wurmser, Executive Director of the Ann May Center for Nursing at Hackensack Meridian Health and Matthew Lang, Executive Director of the Ocean Medical Center Foundation.
During its ten-year history (2011-2020), The Barbara Forfar Nursing Scholarship Fund has awarded $20,000 in total to 35 nurses and nursing students of Ocean Medical Center.
ABOUT THE BARBARA FORFAR NURSING SCHOLARSHIP FUND:
The Barbara Forfar Nursing Scholarship Fund was established on January 15, 2011 and is part of the Ocean Medical Center Foundation family of funds.
The fund provides monetary assistance to qualified nurses and nursing students of Ocean Medical Center who desire to continue their formal education in nursing profession in the form of scholarships and awards one (or more) nursing scholarship during September of each year to eligible applicants.
The Barbara Forfar Nursing Scholarship Fund was established to honor the memory of long-time Point Pleasant resident Barbara Forfar or “Foof” as she was called by her fellow nurses and other colleagues in the operating room, and her forty-four years of dedication to the nursing profession with all but three years of her service associated with the Ocean Medical Center or its predecessor hospitals.
To qualify for the scholarship, the applicant must be an employee or nursing student at Ocean Medical Center and must be enrolled in a RN program, an upper division program (RN to BSN) or advanced degree program (MSN, PhD) in nursing.
All Ocean Medical Center nurses and nursing students from all OMC practice areas are eligible to apply. The scholarship must be used to supplement tuition, fees, lab costs, books or educational supply expenses.
