Inaugural Scholarships Awarded


SEPTEMBER 19, 2011 (BRICK, NJ) - The scholarship advisory committee of the Barbara Forfar Nursing Scholarship Fund is pleased to announce that the Fund has awarded nursing scholarships totaling $1,500 to members of the Ocean Medical Center staff.

Sigrid Alaan, Laurie Romano and Nancy Trione, all employees at Ocean Medical Center, were presented three individual $500 scholarships during an award ceremony held Monday afternoon, September 19, 2011 on the OMC main campus in Brick, NJ.

All three 2011 scholarship recipients were selected by the Barbara Forfar Nursing Scholarship Fund Scholarship Advisory Committee after the Committee reviewed all scholarship applications and supporting documents submitted from all candidates.

Sigrid Alaan attends the Georgian Court Meridian Health School of Nursing in pursuit of her BSN. She patrols the halls of OMC 2 West as a full-time patient care associate. Upon graduation, Alaan plans to continue to work for Meridian Health as a critical care nurse.

Laurie Romano is a valued team member of the OMC Access Services Department in the Charity Care Unit. She attends the Ocean County College School of Nursing studying for her RN. Romano has an interest in becoming a specialist in OMC’s Operating Room or Emergency Room in the future.

Nancy Trione, who already holds her RN, is currently a part-time staff nurse in the OMC Post Anesthesia Care Unit. She has been a member in good standing of the OMC nursing corps for over thirty-plus years and consistently maintains her Clinical Ladder status as well as her national CPAN certification. Romano began working at Point Pleasant Hospital as an EKG technician and is currently pursuing her BSN at Kean University on the Ocean County campus.


ABOUT THE BARBARA FORFAR NURSING SCHOLARSHIP FUND:
The Barbara Forfar Nursing Scholarship Fund was established on January 15, 2011 and is part of the Ocean Medical Center Foundation family of funds.

The fund provides monetary assistance to qualified nurses and nursing students of Ocean Medical Center who desire to continue their formal education in nursing profession in the form of scholarships and awards one (or more) nursing scholarship during September of each year to eligible applicants.

The Barbara Forfar Nursing Scholarship Fund was established to honor the memory of long-time Point Pleasant resident Barbara Forfar or “Foof” as she was called by her fellow nurses and other colleagues in the operating room, and her forty-four years of dedication to the nursing profession with all but three years of her service associated with the Ocean Medical Center or its predecessor hospitals.

To qualify for the scholarship, the applicant must be an employee or nursing student at Ocean Medical Center and must be enrolled in a RN program, an upper division program (RN to BSN) or advanced degree program (MSN, PhD) in nursing.

All Ocean Medical Center nurses and nursing students from all OMC practice areas are eligible to apply. The scholarship must be used to supplement tuition, fees, lab costs, books or educational supply expenses.

The Barbara Forfar Nursing Scholarship Fund awards one (or more) nursing scholarship during September of each year to eligible applicants.
